Flexural strength of advanced ceramics

The stress at which a ceramic breaks in bending, measured under ASTM C1161. It is the limiting property of hard, brittle wear materials: they resist being scratched extremely well and tolerate very little bending or shock before fracture.

That a dedicated standard exists for this property is itself informative. Hardness is what ceramic tile is bought for; flexural strength is what ends it.

An impact loads a tile in bending, whether directly or through a substrate that flexes under it. This is the material reason a ceramic liner does not belong on a primary impact face — not a manufacturing weakness, but the property that defines the material class.
